Lung Transplant (Pulmonary Transplantation)

 

  • Recipient - end stage pulmonary disease that has failed medical therapy. Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD) Suppurative lung disease (Cystic Fibrosis, Bronchiectasis), Pulmonary fibrosis, Pulmonary hypertension.
    • Complications - General Surgical, Rejection, Drug related (Immunosuppression, Cancers, Steroid-related)

 

  • Donor - limited supply is the main issue. Donor conset depends of the applied acceptance criteria, and as such limits supply. Quality of donor organs impacts outcome (Donor age - <55yrs; Ischaemic time < 8hrs; Evidence of Aspiraton or Pneumonia; ?Smoking; ?Chest wall or lung trauma). Use of 'Non-Beating' donors also an option.
  • Procedure - Single lung transplant; Bilateral lung transplant; or Heart lung transplantation.
